First of all, I’m not a doctor (and I don’t play one on television). I’m not going to give you medical advice. Always consult a physician for a medical condition. Use your common sense and avoid sensational claims about “curing” acne, pimples, blackheads, whiteheads that don’t make sense.

The most common cause of acne is adolescence or puberty. Growing up itself doesn’t cause pimples, but the spurt of hormones (especially androgen or male hormones) all teens experience can cause a flare-up of acne. Yes, even girls have male hormones, just in different amounts at different times than boys. Like many things in life, it’s a question of how much and how often.

The actual reason why one pore gets clogged and becomes infected and not another is still not clear to scientists. One thing is clear - pimples are not caused by dirty skin. A pimple starts beneath the surface of the skin, where you cannot wash. Too much washing or scrubbing can make acne worse.

Less common causes of pimples are an excess of androgen hormones, allergies (including food allergies), rare genetic disorders and gross neglect of hygiene. All but the last should be handled by a doctor. Since most cases of acne clear up by themselves, there’s no need to panic over an occasional flare-up during the teen years. While severe acne can cause scarring, most cases do not. Again, see your doctor if you’re concerned about scarring.

I had my own bouts of acne during my teen years, and occasionally get whiteheads from time to time. In my own case, the acne cleared on its own, and the whiteheads have responded to a change in my diet, including drinking lots of water.

I have more information about what I’ve discovered about my own skin at my blog, listed below in my bio box.
